November 20, 1996: Bishop David Gitari (right) is elected the new Archbishop of the Church of the Province of Kenya beating Bishop Joseph Otieno Wasonga (3rd right). Electoral College officials did not divulge details of the results but said Gitari won by a two-thirds majority. “We prayed. The Lord has answered us,” Gitari said after the elections shortly after 10 pm. Bishop Wasonga said the point is : We have accepted the will of God. It was in good spirit . Insider sources at the All Saints Cathedral, Nairobi, where the voting took place, said Gitari had a slight edge over his rival, although it did not mean he was set to win.
