March 11, 1975: MP for Nyandarua North, Mr. Josiah Mwangi Kariuki (popularly known as JM), is reported dead. One of his wives said she had identified a body found in the Ngong Hills as being that of Mr. Kariuki. No official confirmation was available. Contacted for comment, the Vice-President Daniel arap Moi said: ” If it is true then it is a tragedy and a great shock for everyone, a loss to the nation, a sad thing for Kenya and for anyone who wants a peaceful and a bright future for Kenya,” Mr. Moi appealed to the peopIe of Kenya to remain calm and restrained. He said there would be no further comment until there was a positive proof. At Mr. Kariuki’s Nairobi residence last night were several women, all looking sad and sobbing.
