November 22, 1990:Mr. Paul Joseph Ngei (right), one of Kenya’s longest-serving Cabinet Ministers loses his Cabinet post and parliamentary seat after the Court of Appeal declared him bankrupt. After the judgment, Mr. Ngei, the Minister for Manpower Development and Employment, told reporters outside the court that his 40-year political career was over. “Nitaenda kulima” (I am going back to farming)he said as he entered his GK registration Volvo limousine and was driven away. The Minister, who wore a dark-grey suit, remained composed throughout the 50-minute judgment read by Mr. Justice J.O. Nyarangi sitting with Mr. Justice J.R.O. Masime and Mr. Justice A.M. Cockar. Mr. Ngei, who until the judgment the MP for Kangundo has been a Cabinet Minister since Kenya attained independence in 1963.
