October 20, 1983: Professor Alfred Otieno and Mr. Willy Munywoki Mutunga (in handcuffs) of the University of Nairobi are released from detention. President Moi announces their release during celebrations to mark Kenyatta Day at Uhuru Park, Nairobi. Prof Otieno is a former Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Mr. Mutunga taught at the Faculty of Law. Their release brings the number of detainees recentlv released to four . On October 12, President Moi set free Doctor Al Amin Mazrui of Kenyatta University College and Mr. John Khaminwa, a lawver. In the photo, Mr. Mutunga is being led to the cells in June 1982.
