History 191023

October 19, 1990: Former legislator Koigi wa Wamwere (in specs) who was arrested about two weeks ago after he reportedly sneaked into Kenya from self-exile in Norway, is charged with treason. The former Nakuru North MP was charged along with two lawyers – Mr. Rumba Kinuthia, of Nairobi, and Mr. Mirugi Kariuki, of Nakuru, both of whom have been in custody for the last 11 days and a young , Mr. Geoffrey Kuga Kariuki. They allegedly compassed, imagined and intended to overthrow the Government between January 1989 and October 8, 1990. The offence, If proven, is punishable by death. The four men were brought to the Nairobi Chief magistrate’s court at 3.25 pm under an armed guard of 30 security men. A tight security cordon was evident all over the Law Courts building and only lawyers, the Norwegian Ambassador to Kenya, Mr. Niels L. Dahl, and journalists were allowed into Magistrate Omondi Tunya’s court.
