History 140224

February 14, 1997: The Joint Admissions Board spells out new changes in university admission procedures and abolished the system of cut-off points. All students with grade C+ at the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination will be eligible for university admission as long as they have the right subject clusters. Although C+ has been the standard entry requirement, the practice has been to peg admission to cut-off points which have fluctuated yearly. Under the new system, admission will depend on subject clusters rather than on points attained. Admissions Board Chairman Francis Gichaga said in a statement: “It should be noted that the changes imply that admission into public universities will no longer be based on a cut-off point with regard to the overall KCSE weight.” The statement was released by the five vice-chancellors of the public universities after a meeting at Kenyatta university.
