History 130224

February 13, 1961: Deposed Congolese Premier Patrice Lumumba (left) is killed by Lunda tribesmen in South Katanga, following his escape with two colleagues from a Katanga prison farm last Friday. Katanga’s Minister of the interior Mr. Godefroid Munongo said the village in which Lumumba and his two lieutenants had been killed would be awarded the £3000 reward offered by the government for the capture of the fugitives. Munongo went on: “I would be lying if I said that the death of Lumumba saddened me. You know my feelings on this subject: He was a common law criminal, responsible notably for the death of thousands of persons in Katanga and tens of thousands in Kasai without counting the persecutions and exterminations in Orientale and Kivu. Provinces.
