December 11, 1981: Nyeri MP. Yusuf Waruru Kanja’s three-year jail term is reduced to one year by the High Court. “Mr. Kanja is remorseful and appears to suffer from allergic asthma and sinusitis and we reduce the sentence by two years.” Said Justice S.K. Sachdeva and Justice A.M. Cockar in their ruling on Kanja’s appeal. Mr. Kanja was jailed for three years on September 24 for contravening the Exchange Control Act. On June 7, police found $2100 sterling and travellers cheques for $460 in Kanja’s house in Nyeri in contravention of the Act by failing to offer the currency for sale. Mr. Kanja had filed his appeal by against the sentence lawyer Mr. Kirumba Mwaura and Mr. Gibson Kamau Kuria.
