History 031023

October 3, 2001: Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta (second left), The son of Kenya’s first president is nominated as a Member of Parliament. The nomination is seen as signaling a major Cabinet reshuffle which might give a clear indication of President Moi’s intended successor. Mr. Kenyatta, the first son of Mzee Jomo Kenyatta by Mama Ngina, replaces Mr. Mark Too who resigned as a nominated MP last month. Sources said that Mr. Kenyatta, aged 40, was asked to cut short his trip abroad and return to Kenya on Monday before the nomination was finally announced. Mr. Kenyatta, a businessman, is one of a crop of youthful politicians to whom President Moi has hinted he will hand over. Seen here as Kanu presidential poll loser Uhuru Kenyatta concedes defeat by Narc’s Mwai Kibaki at Nairobi’s Serena Hotel on December 2002. He was with Eldoret North MP William Ruto (left) and former NSSF boss Jos Konzolo.
