September 26, 1990: President Moi unleashes a scathing attack on the Secretary-General of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut), Mr. Ambrose Adeya Adongo,(pictured) whom he described as a dissident and a fool. The President was speaking at a fund-raising meeting in Kitale, castigated Mr. Adongo for his threat early this week to call out on strike the 200,000 strong teaching fraternity unless the Ministry of Education implements a new scheme of service for teachers. President Moi withdrew the new scheme which outlines new terms of service for non-graduate teachers saying that it was his brainchild and would not be reinstated until and unless Mr. Adongo and the Knut secretariat in Nairobi apologised to him personally. The Head of State described Mr. Adongo as a man who had no love for children and who would, therefore, dare call a teachers strike at a time when Standard Eight pupils and Form Four students were preparing for their examinations. However, the President said he was impressed by teachers good work and sympathised with them because he was himself a teacher. But he singled out Mr. Adongo as the arch trouble-maker in the profession.
