October 9, 1993: President Moi raises Sh3.7 million for Gor Mahia Football Club in 50-minutes harambee rally in Nairobi . FORD Kenya chairman Oginga Odinga (right) said during the fundraiser at the City Stadium that Gor Mahia was not a Luo side but one with a national appeal. He donated Sh705,000 and Vice-President George Saitoti Sh30,000. The money will build Gor Mahia’s club house on a seven acre plot in Kasarani, Nairobi. The rally brought together many leaders from the Luo community in which the club enjoys unqualified support. They filed past the President from the Kisumu Rural MP, Prof Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o, who gave Sh1,000 ,to Mr. Odinga, who presented Sh220,000. Mr. Allan Thigo, the gifted midfielder of the 1970s, presented a ball to President Moi commemorating the team’s Silver Jubilee. Transport and Communications Minister Mr. Dalmas Otieno was applauded when he said he could not speak on such an occasion but only “humbly call Mzee Odinga to talk.” Mr. Otieno had been invited by Nairobi PC Francis Lekolol to speak as the chairman of the fundraising organising committee.
