July 19, 1990: The International Bar Association, concerns at the state of human rights in Kenya, cancels its biennial meeting scheduled for NairobI in September. The meeting will now be held in New York. The executive director of the London-based IBA, Mrs. Madeline May, told the Nation “The IBA has decided with great regret to cancel its biennial conference in Nairobi. “Safety of delegates is paramount and following three days of serious unrest in the capital and other central areas, we feel that such safety cannot be guaranteed. Mrs. May went on to say that although Kenya was peaceful now, “we cannot be sure this will be the case in September. She said the IBA was also greatly concerned by the state of human rights and the rule of law in Kenya. Mrs. May said: “A number of persons are detained without being charged including four lawyers, at least one of who was arrested when he went to a police station to interview his client.
