May 15. 1989: President Moi receives a UN award for outstanding environmental achievements. The United Nations Environment Programme (Unep) presented President Moi with a Global 500 award when he visited the oganisation’s headquarters at Gigiri in Nairobi to address the governing council which started a 12-day meeting. Unep annually makes “Global 500” awards to individuals and organisations for their significant practical contributions to preserving and improving the environment, at local, national and global levels. The awards are in the form of simple certificates. President Moi is among 113 “Global 500′ laureates from 50 countries this year. Others include rural workers, urban activists, journalists, film makers, scientists, business leaders, and administrators.
