History 130624

June 13, 1990: Nakuru Kanu branch chairman, Mr. Wilson Leitich (centre) withdraws earlier instructions to youth wingers to chop off the two fingers flashed by advocates of a multi-party system. Mr. Leitich, who telephoned the Nation from Kanu headquarters, said he agreed with the views expressed by the party headquarters that it was illegal and unlawful for the youth wingers to take the law in their own hands and chop off the fingers. “I have instructed my youth wingers not to act unlawfully,” he said. But the Nominated MP warned supporters of a multi-party form of government to act within the established laws and refrain from provoking supporters of the single-party system. On Monday, Mr. Leitich instructed Nakuru Kanu youth wingers to carry knives while in plainclothes and chop off the two fingers flashed by supporters of multi-party politics. The instruction drew the wrath of Kanu headquarters. The party’s Director of Legal and International Affairs, Mr. Steve Mwenesi, said he was contacting the Nakuru branch with a view to having the instructions withdrawn. Mr. Leitich, who was addressing a Kanu Day rally said matatu and bus drivers were among the multi-party supporters who were raising two fingers. Here, Mr. Leitich seen arguing with Nakuru county Council vice-chairman Mr. Charles Rono during a meeting in Molo in October 1998.
