July 11, 1963: Senator Clement Lubembe (right) tenders his resignation as the Leader of Government Business in the Senate to the Prime Minister, Mr. Jomo Kenyatta, in order to play part more effectively in the trade union movement. Senator Lubembe, who is Deputy General Secretary of the Kenya Federation of Labour, told me that due to his interest in the labour movement, he had decided to resign his job as the Leader of Government Business. “ I wish to serve the workers. Everyone knows that I am interested in helping the country as I have done in the past. “I am grateful to the Prime Minister who has considered this very carefully and sympathetically.” Senator Lubembe said he could not say who would succeed him as this was a Cabinet decision. Political observers believe that the Deputy Leader of Government Business, Sen. Joseph Mathenge (Nyeri) will be asked to act as the leader until a permanent appointment is made. Trade unionists see in Sen. Lubembe’s resignation his intention to fight for the general-secretaryship of the KFL which will be vacated by Mr. Peter Kibisu at the weekend. Photo|Nation Syndication
